Frankfort begins road to recovery after historic flooding

Bellepoint Community Church among those hit hardest by high water

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Residents in Frankfort are beginning the long process of recovery after devastating floods left parts of the city underwater and many homes unreachable.

As flood waters recede, much of the damage is still being assessed, but for some, the loss is already clear.

“I would like to just sit down and cry, to be honest I’m very heart broken at this point,” said FD Robinson, pastor of Bellepoint Community Church.

The church, inaccessible due to floodwater, sustained major damage. Robinson said they tried to prepare by moving everything out of the basement, but it wasn’t enough.

“We’ve had the basement flood, we’ve cleaned up, pressure washed and been back going very soon,” he said. “But at this point here, we’ve lost everything. All of our musical equipment, all of our pews, everything in the sanctuary,” said Robinson.

Robinson said the last time the area experienced flooding of this magnitude was in 1978. He said he’s never seen anything like this in his lifetime.

Compounding the loss, Bellepoint Community Church does not have flood insurance.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the flood insurance,” Robinson said. “We’re a small community church, we were unable to afford the flood insurance. At this point we’re just leaning on the community to help us rebuild, and recoup,” said Robinson.

The Bellepoint Community Church has set up a Gofundme, that link can be found here.

The city has established supply distribution centers for residents in need at Lakeview Park, Juniper Hill Park and Western Hills High School. They will remain open until 8 p.m.
