Former UK football player shot

RED JACKET, WV (WTVQ) – Former University of Kentucky football player and current Phelps High School Head Coach David Jones, was shot early Wednesday morning in West Virginia, according to the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say Jones was shot in the abdomen in Red Jacket, West Virginia.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately released.

After leading Belfry High School in Kentucky to back-to-back state titles in 2003 and 2004, Jones was a First Team All-State selection and was named the Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star Game MVP prior to beginning his playing career at UK.

At Kentucky, he was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team. He played on both sides of the ball and on special teams.

Jones signed with the Baltimore Ravens after college.

He also played for multiple professional indoor football teams.
