Former Kentucky lawmaker Marshall Long dies

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Former Kentucky lawmaker Marshall Long, who served a stint as House budget committee chairman, has died after an extended illness.

Funeral director Steve Collins says the longtime lawmaker from Shelbyville died Wednesday at the age of 82.

Long’s tenure in the Kentucky House spanned the 1980s and 1990s, and he then served in the state Senate.

Long was a popular Democratic lawmaker who served as chairman of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee in the early 1990s.

State Rep. Jody Richards, a former House speaker, on Wednesday remembered Long for his expertise on the budget, and said Long’s tenure as budget committee chairman came in the crucial early years after lawmakers passed a sweeping education reform law.

Long was also a former Shelbyville mayor.

Collins says arrangements at Hall-Taylor Funeral Home were pending.
