Forest Service Urges Caution, Fire Safety During Hunting Season

WINCHESTER, Ky., (WTVQ) – The modern gun deer season in Kentucky begins Saturday, and many hunters are expected to seek their game in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Since the forest is shared among multiple users, Forest Service officials are urging hunters and other forest visitors to take some extra safety precautions.

“We have five wildlife management areas in the national forest that provide outstanding hunting grounds, but these areas also have trails that are enjoyed year round by hikers, horseback riders and other outdoor enthusiasts,” said Forest Supervisor Bill Lorenz.

“Deer hunters using firearms are required to wear hunter orange clothing, but other forest visitors may want to consider wearing orange until deer season ends.”

In the Daniel Boone National Forest, hunting is allowed in the general forest area outside of developed recreation areas, such as campgrounds and picnic areas. Hunters must also be at least 150 yards away from lakes, roads and trails.

“Hunters and forest visitors should be aware of current fire restrictions,” said Fire Management Officer CorDell Taylor.

“Due to worsening drought conditions, fires are currently prohibited in the general forest area, outside of designated recreation areas in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

“Campfires are only allowed in recreation areas with existing metal fire rings or pedestal grills installed by the Forest Service.”

As a campfire alternative, portable camp stoves and lanterns are allowed in the general forest area.

Since national forest lands are highly intermingled with state and private lands, detailed maps are recommended for hunters to determine property boundary lines and other locations. Maps are available at Forest Service office locations.
