Foggy start to Wednesday ahead of late week wintry weather

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! Be alert for the foggy conditions early this morning. A Dense Fog Advisory is in place for the I-64 corridor and the bluegrass region through 9 a.m. Once this fog fades we are going to track a round of breezy rain showers that will be moving through. This will be the start of the colder air moving in. We will end the day in the upper 40s and low 50s, after starting the day in the mid-to-upper 50s.

COLD AIR ARRIVES TONIGHT
Temperatures will fall into the mid-30s late tonight and into your Thursday morning. Feels-like temperatures will be even colder than that, into the mid-20s in spots. Our first chance of a rain/snow mix will arrive during the mid-morning and early afternoon hours. These rain and/or snow showers will be off and on through the afternoon hours. Temperatures will be above freezing so don’t expect much of this to stick and there will likely be some rain mixing in as well.

SNOW THURSDAY EVENING
After a break in rain and snow chances Thursday afternoon before a round of snow showers move in Thursday evening. This will be our best chance of seeing light accumulation. This could also impact your Thursday evening commute due to low visibility. This round will continue through the early morning hours of Friday. Because temperatures will be right around freezing, this will lead to light accumulation. If we do see any brief intense bands, this may lead to isolated slick spots on roadways.

BLUSTERY FRIDAY
It will feel like the upper teens and low 20s Friday morning. You will definitely need a winter jacket as you head out the door. Temperatures will climb above freezing during the mid-morning hours on Friday, leading to any of the light snow accumulation to melt. A rain and snow mix will return during the midday and afternoon hours on Friday. The one exception to this will be in the higher elevations (above 2500 to 3000 ft) of southeastern Kentucky. Those areas could see a few inches of snow accumulation as temperatures will be colder on the high ridge tops.

DRYING OUT THIS WEEKEND
Rain and snow chances will taper off Friday evening and into early Saturday morning. Saturday will start off cold and it will remain chilly throughout the day. Afternoon highs will range from the low 40s in eastern Kentucky, to the mid-to-upper 40s across central Kentucky. Sunday morning will likely be a cold one, at-or-below freezing in the valleys. A mild push of air will return for the afternoon, leading to high temperatures in the mid-50s.

RAIN CHANCES LEADING INTO THANKSGIVING
Rain chances will increase Monday into Tuesday of next week. Heavy rain is possible on Tuesday so be alert if you are doing holiday travel for the middle of next week. There will likely be another push of colder air that will arrive after Thanksgiving into the extended holiday weekend as well.
