Flaherty man wins 4th straight ‘Largest Watermelon Contest’ at State Fair

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – When it comes to growing gigantic watermelons, no one in Kentucky does it better than Frank Mudd, of Flaherty in Meade County.

On Friday, he won his fourth straight ‘Largest Watermelon Contest’ at the Kentucky State Fair, and did so by setting a new fair record.

Mudd’s melon weighed-in at 296.5 pounds.

What’s the secret to his success?  It may be that he germinates his own seeds for the watermelons.

He received a $100 prize for his record-setting melon.

It’s on display in the West Hall at the Fair.

The Fair runs through August 27 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
