First snowflakes of the season possible as colder air moves in

Temperatures take a sharp drop after a mild Saturday, with snow showers and bitter cold on the way.

A Beautiful Saturday Before the Chill

Saturday was about as nice as you can ask for in November — plenty of sunshine and highs warming into the mid to upper 60s across central and eastern Kentucky. But that warmth isn’t sticking around for long. A cold front is on the move, and it’s about to remind us that winter isn’t far away.

Showers Return Late Tonight and Into Sunday

As we head into tonight, clouds will start to build back in ahead of that next system. Most of the night will stay dry, but a few light showers could sneak into the area by early Sunday morning. Overnight lows will dip into the mid-40s, setting us up for a noticeably cooler day ahead.

Sunday itself will feature on-and-off showers with highs only in the low 50s. That’s where the real transition begins — behind the rain, much colder air will rush in. By the afternoon, temperatures will start falling quickly as gusty northwest winds push into the region.

First Snowflakes of the Season

By late Sunday evening, that cold air will be here in full force. As temperatures drop into the mid-20s overnight, any leftover moisture could switch over to light snow showers — marking the first flakes of the season for much of central Kentucky.

These snow showers will continue on and off through Monday, especially in the Bluegrass and higher elevations of eastern Kentucky. Most areas will see less than an inch of snow, but the higher elevations could pick up a bit more.

While travel issues should be minimal for most, slick spots could develop in the higher elevations if heavier bursts occur.

Bitter Cold and Windy Monday

Monday will be the coldest day we’ve seen so far this season. Highs will struggle to get out of the 30s, and gusty northwest winds could push wind chills down into the teens during the morning hours. Some snow showers may linger into the afternoon before tapering off by the evening.

By Monday night, skies clear out and temperatures tumble back into the low 20s — with “feels-like” readings possibly in the teens once again.

Warming Back Up Midweek

After the cold start to the week, we’ll finally get a break. Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs in the low 40s, and a warming trend continues through the end of the week. By Thursday and Friday, temperatures should climb back into the upper 50s and even low 60s as a warm front pushes through.
