Kentucky nurses leave for Florida to help storm victims

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The first Kentucky nurse strike team was deployed to help Hurricane Irma victims in Florida Thursday morning.

Nurses from Northern and Central Kentucky are in route to Orlando, Florida and will stay for the next two weeks.

According to the Franklin County Public Health Center — 10 nurses and two administrative assistants volunteered to go.

They will be helping out at a shelter and relieving many Florida nurses, doctors and medical personnel that are already overwhelmed with patients.

ABC 36 was there as the nurses loaded up their vehicles with suitcases, water, and medical supplies and got their last marching orders.

The team is expected to arrive in Orlando Thursday evening and start working Friday morning.

A second Kentucky nurse strike team is being formed to help meet the demands in Florida.

There’s no word yet on when they will be deployed.
