SHELBYVILE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer Wednesday afternoon has caused Interstate 64 in Shelby County to be blocked in both directions, according to Kentucky State Police.

Officers say five vehicles were traveling westbound on I64. When traffic slowed due to someone helping a motorist on the side of the road, a tractor trailer truck didn’t slow down and hit a car in its path. The chain reaction resulted in damage to three other vehicles.

The crash occurred near the 35 mile marker. Emergency officials have shut down the interstate in both directions.  State police say three people were transported to Shelbyville Jewish Hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the car struck by the tractor-trailer was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office.

It is not known how long I-64 will be closed, but officials believe it will affect the afternoon commute.  Kentucky State Police say the following detours have been established:

Westbound traffic – Exit 43 (Waddy/Peytona) to U.S. 60.
Eastbound traffic – Exit 32 to U.S. 60.
