Fatal Whitley County altercation under investigation

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police are investigating an altercation on Tuesday that turned violent, leaving one man involved dead.

According to KSP, the London Post was notified by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office around 1 p.m. on Sept. 15 about a possible shooting at a residence on Buck Creek Road.

The preliminary investigation found that an altercation occurred between Derrick L. Cook, 43, of Richmond, Indiana and Michael C. Lemaster, 36, of Lily.

The two men were inside Lemaster’s home when they got into a fight. Cook pulled a knife and cut Lemaster. Lemaster got out a firearm and shot towards Cook, fatally striking him.

Cook was pronounced dead by the Whitley County Coroner’s Office. He has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing and will be presented to the Whitley County Grand Jury.
