Family of murdered Mercer Co. teen watch suspects plea not guilty

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ)- The family of 17-year-old Tristan Cole sat in a Mercer County courtroom Tuesday as two of the three teens charged in his death, stood before a judge.

Soon after court proceedings began, it was three pleas of “not guilty” from 17-year-old Trent Easterling and 18-year-olds Zachary Lay and Meagan Sims.

Court indictments revealed it was Easterling who investigators say killed Cole in April. The teenager’s body was discovered on April 13th near a barn off Deep Creek Road, west of Harrodsburg.

The other teens are charged with tampering with physical evidence in the case.

Dustin Cole, Tristan’s cousin sat in on the court case Tuesday afternoon along with Cole’s grandmother, who raised him.

“Confusion, anger, sadness. Trying to find the answers and why somebody would do something so hurtful to somebody that was so nice, kind and loving. It’s hard everyday,” says Cole.

Easterling and Sims will be back in court August 9th, Lay will appear in September.
