Explosion and fire damages GenCanna facility in Clark County

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ) – There was an explosion and fire at the GenCanna plant in Clark County on Thursday night, according to a dispatcher with Winchester Police.

The fire chief on the scene tells ABC 36 News that the explosion happened in the lab section of the facility, which caused heavy structural damage.

The fire chief says there were employees in the building at the time, but that no one was hurt.

In addition to the local fire departments, four fire units from the Lexington Fire Department also responded to the scene, according to the department’s online incident status web page.

GenCanna is an agricultural technology company that processes hemp at its facility in Clark County.

The company is home to Kentucky’s first internal hemp processing lab and was among the first members of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Industrial Hemp Pilot Program.

GenCanna cultivates and supplies farms with hemp plants.
