Exclusive: American Pharoah Thriving in New Career

VERSAILLES, Ky. (WTVQ)- He is the rarest of the rare. A young, living legend.

The world watched American Pharoah take the Triple Crown. And now he’s thriving in his new career at Ashford Stud in Versailles.

Since his 2015 move to the farm, he has had a busy breeding schedule about five months out of the year.

Scott Calder of Ashford Stud says, “We have a number of horses here, they’re all very well handled and easy to deal with. But he probably takes that to an extreme level.”

He also greets his fans from across the world. The farm says their visits, along with other fundraisers, have helped raise more than $200-thousand for non-profit groups.

“A lot of good has come out of him being here. Horse Country tours…Ashford Stud’s proceeds go to local communities around the farm. We’ve also had donations to charities, whether it’s halters or VIP experiences that benefit people in Kentucky, and even further than that.”

According to Calder, the farm is expecting upwards of 150 foals to be born next year. The hope is that pedigree and promise will put his offspring in the winner’s circle. “Even if they can have a fraction of the ability he had, and that same mindset, you’d be very hopeful that he would be successful,” says Calder.

Meanwhile, Pharoah is content in his new life at Ashford Stud.

And when it comes to running when he’s turned out each day Calder says, “To be perfectly honest, he seems happier eating grass. He kind of gets out there, has a roll around and spends the rest of this morning with his head down, eating grass.”

A simple and good life for the equine superstar who changed the way we define the word impossible.
