“Empty the Shelters” kicks off nationwide

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The BISSELL Pet Foundation is partnered with animal shelters nationwide to offer adoptions for $25 or less. In central Kentucky, the Scott County Humane Society, the Lexington Humane Society and the Paris Animal Welfare Society are taking part in “Empty the Shelters”.

From October 4th until October 10th, BISSELL says these shelters will have animals for adoption at a significantly reduced rate. Scott County Humane says as a rescue shelter, events like this are a huge help because more room can be made to bring in animals from the shelter.

“That’s kind of our reward, seeing animals get adopted so we’re always very happy and makes it worthwhile to go out and help another animal,” says Kriss Lowry, board chair for the Scott County Humane Society.

“Empty the Shelters” started in 2016 as a part of BISSELL Pet Foundation’s mission to end pet homelessness. The organization says events like this are important for many reasons.

“To make, you know, pet adoption a little more affordable so that you can spend money on buying new items for your pets or tucking it away for those medical savings that we all know come with adopting a pet,” says Brittany Schlacter with the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

The Scott County Humane Society says $25 is a bargain, not only are you getting a lifelong friend but all vetting and shots for the pets have been taken care of.

With high adoption rates in 2020 due to people quarantining, Scott County Humane says it’s expecting even more adoptions this year because of an increase in animals being dropped off.

“I think part of it is just that people weren’t doing a lot of things last year,” says Lowry. “They just weren’t giving up cats or dogs or getting them fixed and that resulted in even more cats and dogs this year so it’s even more important I think this year to help us get animals adopted than it was last year.”
