EKU student dies days before graduation

RICHMOND, Ky. (WTVQ) – What should have been a graduation celebration is instead a somber day at Eastern Kentucky University’s campus.

The coroner says a second EKU student, Cody Garcia, who was from Lexington, has died from injuries suffered in a crash earlier this week in Madison County.

Garcia, 23, was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. His fraternity brothers say he was proud to be graduating and now his brothers will be walking across the stage on Saturday to accept his diploma.

Garcia was a student at EKU’s College of Justice and Safety.

Earlier this week, police say Garcia was in a two-vehicle crash on Jack’s Creek Road in Madison County.

An EKU nursing student, Alyssa Moorman, 20, of Ohio, died that night according to investigators.

Two other EKU students and a third person were also hurt but the school says they are all OK.

The coroner says Garcia passed away Thursday night from a traumatic brain injury caused by the wreck.

Those who knew Garcia say he was always a genuine guy who loved life and would do anything for anyone.

Police say the accident is still under investigation.

There is a vigil planned for Garcia Tuesday night at his high school alma mater, Tates Creek, in Lexington.

A Go Fund Me page has also been set up in his honor.
