Eastern Kentucky sailor killed in WWII to be buried next month
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Pikeville sailor killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor will be buried in his final resting place next month.
On Wednesday, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced 19-year-old Navy Seaman 1st Class Millard Burk, Jr., of Pikeville, was accounted for on July 25, 2018.
Burk was killed on December 7, 1941 when the ship he was assigned to, the USS Oklahoma, was attacked by the Japanese.
The USS Oklahoma took multiple torpedo hits, and it quickly capsized, killing 429 people, including Burk.
The Navy recovered the remains of the deceased crew, which were then interred in the Halawa and Nu’uanu Cemeteries.
Burk’s remains were identified through dental and DNA analysis.
Burk will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl, on July 19.
