‘Drive-in’ ceremony to honor girls with Scout Bronze and Silver awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – More than 100 young women from 66 counties will receive two of Girl Scouts highest levels of achievement – the Bronze Award and Silver Award — during a special ‘drive-in ceremony.’

Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Drive-In Bronze & Silver Highest Award Ceremony will take place Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Camp Shawano at 3775 Newman Road in Lexington to pay tribute to the girls’ dedication to making a difference for people in areas such as social services, healthcare, and education.

Similar to a drive-in theatre, guests will be invited to attend and watch the ceremony live from the comfort of their own vehicles. Audio will be provided with a large outdoor speaker. The ceremony will also be live-streamed on the GSKWR Facebook page (@KYGirlScouts).

Girl Scouting’s highest awards program gives girls unique opportunities to reach out to others in need, both locally and globally. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior in grades 4 – 5 can achieve.

Girls and their teams plan and complete a 20+ hour Take Action Project to make a difference in the community.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette in grades 6 – 8 can earn and fosters the skills necessary to design and implement a project that will have a lasting impact on the community, requiring a 50+ hour Take Action Project completed individually or in a small group.

“Through our Girl Scout highest awards program girls begin to know themselves better and realize that they’re truly capable of doing remarkable things and making a real impact, said Susan Douglas, GSKWR’s CEO. “The skills, passions, and competencies fostered through our awards program are lifelong.”

Saturday’s drive-in ceremony will include a presentation of the Bronze & Silver Awards and messages from Douglas; COO Ruby Webster, and Board President Kathleen Regan.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. and vehicles will be permitted to enter beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event’s location, Camp Shawano, is GSKWR’s 142-acre camp property located in Jessamine County, Kentucky.
