Dozens of dogs found euthanized in McCreary County; local advocate speaks out

Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — In McCreary County, dozens of animal remains and bodies have been found euthanized and dumped.

One local animal advocate spoke out.

“So when we heard about this I couldn’t believe it,” said Anita Spreitzer, general manager for Paws 4 the Cause. “I said again? But 80 to 100 dogs, that’s a lot of bodies of dogs and we know that the dogs are being euthanized because they’re being dumped in frozen state. Their bodies are 100 percent whole, they look like their sleeping.”

Spreitzer learned about what was happening by a couple of women who found the dogs on federal property.

They have since taken the evidence to the authorities.

“So we’re very confident that the officials have enough evidence to do what they need to do to work with this investigation. And we’re going to let just take its course.”

But even if justice is served, Spreitzer says there is more work to be done.

“But why we’re actively talking out is about shelter reform and it has to happen here in Kentucky. It has been years and years in the making and they’ve been changing things little by little, but now things need to happen. And there needs to be somebody that oversees the shelters and making sure the shelters are doing what they’re supposed to do.”

Spreitzer says that since posting about the situation on Facebook, they have had multiple calls from other animal advocates in the area saying they have been speaking out on the things that need to change.

“And that’s our hope. The most important thing is it’s time for change in Kentucky and that’s where it needs to start.”

According to Kentucky State Police, the US Forestry investigation department is now looking to the situation.
