Donations pouring in for Lexington Humane Society’s HVAC system

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Donations are pouring in after the Lexington Humane Society asked for the community’s help to help foot a $35,000 bill for a new air conditioning system.

The Humane Society said it first noticed problems with the HVAC system on Friday and called Fayette Heating and Air to find out what was wrong. When the technician got there and checked the machine, the news got worse.

“We’ve got a 20-ton system that is down,” says Bret Melrose, Fayette Heating and Air’s President. “It’s not working at all.”

The massive air conditioning unit, which is more than 10 times the size of the unit in your home, cools parts of the Humane Society on Old Frankfort Pike.

According to the Humane Society, the unit mostly covers the large dog kennel and without it temperatures and humidity are quickly rising.

“It’s a hefty, hefty, hefty budget,” says Ashley Hammond, the Humane Society’s Director of Community Outreach. “It is something obviously that we did not expect to have to pay.”

“In our line of business and taking care of this kind of equipment, it’s very expensive, it’s not easy,” Melrose says. “When you get hit with a capitol expenditure like this that you’re definitely not expecting, it’s something that we have to reach out and help.”

The Humane Society reached out to the community for donations to help cover the $35,000 needed to replace the system. Fayette Heating and Air donated the first $10,000 dollars to jump-start the fund.

On Monday, the Humane Society sent out an email blast and started posting on social media asking for donations. By 11 p.m., that same day, more than $33,000 had been raised for the new HVAC system.
