Doctor Gupta Answers Kentuckians Health Care Questions
It’s the second day for the Health Benefit Exchange in Kentucky. The state reports more than a million page view to the website yesterday.
CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta was in Lexington today to answer Kentuckians questions about the new health insurance changes.
Gupta said for people who already have health insurance through their work, the changes won’t have a big impact on them right now. But it could make a difference down the road because there will not be any insurance caps.
“Say you’re a healthy person right now, but if you get in a car wreck tomorrow, your life, besides your medical injuries, could dramatically change,” Gupta said.
“You could run through the amount of insurance money within a year and then you’re done,” he added.
Under the new laws, Gupta said an insurance company would have to financially stick with you through a medical emergency.
Gupta also said Americans might see insurance premiums going up.
For people without health insurance, Gupta recommends going to healthcare.gov. He said that is where you can get information about the Health Benefit Exchange and eventually apply.
According to Gupta this new health care plan won’t solve all of the problems for people without insurance, but it is a step toward it.
He said it will also make it easier for people with a long term illness to get insurance. Gupta said they can no longer be discriminated against based on a preexisting condition.
