Delayed reporting, students push Fayette to new COVID record
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Delayed reporting from the Labor Day weekend and University of Kentucky students helped Fayette County set a new one-day record for new coronavirus cases Thursday.
And despite hopes to the contrary, September remains on base to set a third straight monthly record for new positive cases.
According to the Lexington Fayette County Health Department’s daily morning report, 149 new cases were confirmed Thursday, pushing the total since March to 6,833.
No new deaths were reported, leaving the total at 66.
Of the new cases, 51 are UK students raising the total of Fayette County UK students to 1,264.
Lexington’s COVID-19 numbers, including charts with demographics, hospitalizations and more, are updated Monday-Saturday at
lfchd.org.
According to the morning report, 5,631 people have recovered, an increase of 90 from the prior report.
“I think people have expressed that they are tired of COVID-19 and the numbers kind of become a blur to them. And we try to make sure people know these aren’t just numbers, these are people,” said Hall. “Every number we report reflects a real person in Lexington.”
Health officials point out the numbers are for UK students who are Fayette County residents and are not a total of all cases at the university. A student who tests positive is considered a Fayette County resident if they live in Fayette County already or elect to stay in Lexington during their isolation.
If they commute to campus from another county or elect to return to their hometown for isolation, they are not in our numbers.
It’s important people continue to follow the latest recommendations in public to stop the spread of the virus:
• Wear a cloth mask over your mouth and nose
• Stay at least 6 feet away from anyone who doesn’t live in your home
• Wash your hands often.
