Deep Freeze Leaves Blood Donations Trickling In

The Kentucky Blood Center is urging those who can brave the cold to drop by one of their centers to make a much-needed donation.

The frigid winter weather caused blood drives to be cancelled and low donor turn outs which are negatively impacting the blood supply for central and eastern Kentucky, according to KBC officials.

The say they’ve only received 54 donations in the past two days, but have transfused nearly 400 units. That has left KBC scrambling to replenish their supply so they will be prepared for another winter storm or emergency.

KBC crews spent much of the day yesterday assuring that the KBC bloodmobiles are able to run in the freezing temperatures.

They are sweetening the deal for donors. This week, anyone who registers to donate blood will be eligible to win a $200 Visa gift card.
