Days left for Woodford Humane Society to close $59,000 shortfall

WOODFORD COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Woodford Humane Society’s annual Summer Gala is coming up but it will run a bit different this year. And with the Coronavirus pandemic, they’ve now lost thousands in event funding. It makes this year’s event more important than ever.

Marketing Director Beth Oleson says they were fully closed for a couple months and recently reopened for adoptions in late May.

While adoptions have been going well, Oleson says, “The problem is that people seem to think once adoptions have started back up that the crisis is over and there are no problems anymore. But adoptions don’t actually bring in any funding for us. They just recoup a small fraction of what we spend on each animal in our care.”

The shelter receives no government funding. Financially speaking, Oleson says the Summer Gala typically brings in $100,000 at a time when intake is the highest. Now, there are just days left for the shelter to close a $59,000 shortfall.

“So we came up with Summer Gala to Go. And it is going to be a drive-thru Keeneland bread pudding curbside pickup,” said Oleson.

Tickets start at $125 and will include a serving of Keeneland’s bread pudding and an entry to win: 3 bottles of hard-to-find bourbon and a $250 gift card to Ouita Michel Family of Restaurants.

Tickets are available through July 19. Then, on Saturday, July 25 those with a ticket can drive to Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Versailles between 2 and 6 p.m. to pickup their bread pudding, curbside to go.

“At the end of the day, it really comes down to we just need that funding. It’s a huge chunk of our budget and if we’re going to be able to continue to provide the excellent care for the animals that we are known for, that funding just has to come in,” said Oleson.

Oleson says there are other ways to help. You can sign up for Kroger Community Rewards. Enroll your Plus card and make Woodford Humane your charity of choice and Kroger will donate on your behalf at no cost to you.

You can also make a donation or set up a monthly automatic gift. Gifts of $100+ can also be matched by the shelters SAVE Matching Fund for double the impact.

People can also enter for the chance to put their pet on the cover of the 2021 Calendar. The winner receives a professional outdoor photoshoot and the coveted front cover of the calendar for their pet.
