Dairy month in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Local farmers gathered Wednesday at the Department of Agriculture for the start of dairy month.

Throughout the pandemic, dairy farmers partnered with local food banks and other businesses to provide milk and other dairy products to help bring relief to hunger across the state.

And dairy is a big business in the state.

Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles says there are more than 47,000 dairy cows in Kentucky, each producing more than seven gallons of milk a day.

“Every single Kentucky dairy farm is a story about a family. It’s paying bills, they’re supporting local community,” Quarles said.

And here’s a fun fact for you, many people think bourbon is the state’s official beverage but it’s actually milk.
