UPDATE: Hiker’s body recovered in Red River Gorge

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Louisville man fell to his death early Tuesday morning in the Red River Gorge, according to Powell County Search & Rescue.

He was identified as 32-year old Maxwell Harrison Suffridge, according to the Wolfe County coroner.

The body was found around 10:00 a.m.

It was a challenging recovery for crews who had to use repelling equipment to reach the man’s body, which was over 200-feet down, according to Mike Sparks with Powell County Search & Rescue.

Investigators say Suffridge was camping with friends near the Pinch-Em-Tight Trail Head at Hanson Point when friends noticed he was missing.  Search and rescue crews were called-in around 3:30 a.m.

Authorities believe the hikers had been drinking, which is against the law on national forest lands.

Crews from Powell, Menifee, Wolfe and Lee counties helped in the search and recovery.
