Crews respond to semi fire and crash on Interstate 75

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire and Police departments responded to a fire and crash involving two semis around midnight Thursday.

The accident happened in the northbound lane of Interstate 75 after fire crews say a tire blew out on a semi truck carrying animal feed.

Fire crews say that caused a fire and forced the driver to pull over to the shoulder of the road at the Newtown Pike exit.

Fire officials tell ABC 36 that while that semi was pulled over, another semi carrying detergent rear-ended it. The driver of the second truck tells ABC 36 that the smoke from the fire was so thick that it made it difficult for him to see the truck stopped in his path.

After the impact, several boxes of dryer sheets from the second truck were scattered all about the interstate and fire crews say the second semi was leaking detergent.

Witnesses say the area smelled more like detergent than smoke.

Officials tell us once they arrived at the scene, they put out the fire and hazmat crews were called to the scene to inspect both trucks, but they say they found nothing hazardous.

The driver of the semi that caught fire was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

The second driver told ABC 36 he was not injured.

The accident slowed traffic on I-75 for at least an hour.

ABC 36 viewer, Tony Peters sent us a video of the fiery semi accident. See the video attached to the story above.
