Court date set for Laurel County cockfighting arrests
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Arraignments have been scheduled for 10 people charged in July during a Kentucky State Police cockfighting bust.
According to arrest citations from Laurel County District Court, Kentucky State Police went to investigate a report of animal cruelty on Loretta Lane on July 11. Authorities found numerous vehicles parked around a large metal building at the end of the lane with several people inside and some carrying around roosters.
Once inside, the arresting officer found Jacklyn Johnson sitting in an announcer’s booth above the stands. She later told authorities she was watching the money for her husband, Rickie Johnson, who was in control of the arena, the citations state.
Rickie later said the money from the door and the fees for each bird was in his wife’s car.
Jacklyn Johnson, of London, was charged with second-degree promoting gambling. Rickie Johnson, also of London, was charged with second-degree animal cruelty and second-degree promoting gambling.
Jason Moore, Dallas Cope, Hiram Creech, Joshua Westerfield, Charles Blevins, Orville Asher, Matthew Lawson and Cye Rose all were charged with second-degree cruelty to animals, according to court records.
Jacklyn Johnson had worked for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office. She has since left that position.
