Cool temperatures Thursday ahead of a big weekend warm-up

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Thursday! It’s chilly start to your day today but don’t worry, we will be warming up big time this weekend and beyond. Afternoon highs for your Thursday will be split. Northern Kentucky will likely stay in the low 60s, while southern Kentucky will make a push towards the upper 60s near 70. Lexington will be right in the middle with temperatures climbing into the mid-60s. A northeasterly breeze will keep our temperatures on the cooler side during the daytime hours as well. Skies will remain mostly sunny through the day as well. Cloud cover increases overnight and temperatures won’t be quite as cold, falling into the low-t0-mid 40s.

A warm front will lift through the region late Friday into Saturday. You can expect a round of showers and a few storms as that front lifts through during the second half of that day on Friday. We aren’t expecting much rain from this round, the bigger headline will be the warm-up on the way after the front passes.

There will be a small chance of a few lingering showers or a storm or two on Saturday as temperatures climb into the upper 70s and low 80s. Sunday’s forecast is trending drier and that should allow temps to easily reach the low 80s for most of the region. The warm temperatures are expected to continue into next week as well. A weak system will move through the region Monday into Tuesday. This will bring a chance of showers and storms, but once again we aren’t expecting these to be strong-to-severe. The trend is towards a weaker system overall moving through the region early next week. This would keep our temperatures warm, leading to a quick return to the upper 70s and low 80s by the middle of next week.

The Climate Prediction Center continues to highlight most of the eastern US for above average temperatures for the start of May. Averages temps here locally are in the low 70s to start the month of May, and we will likely be above that most of next week.
