Cold start to Wednesday ahead of rain chances overnight into Thursday
Temperatures rebound Wednesday afternoon ahead of overnight rain chances
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – It’s frosty start across central and eastern Kentucky this morning with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s, but temperatures will rebound nicely this afternoon. Expect mid-to-upper 50s along I-64 with low-to-mid 60s farther south. Skies will start mostly sunny, but clouds increase later today as our next system moves in.
Meanwhile, river flooding continues along the Kentucky River from Frankfort downstream to the Ohio River. As of this morning, the river at the Frankfort Lock remains in major flood stage, where it has been since the weekend. Water levels are expected to slowly recede through the day.
Our next system brings rain and a few storms by late tonight into Thursday, along with a low-end severe threat during the afternoon. A brief lull around midday may allow some instability to build back in, which could fuel stronger storms later in the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our area under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather. There is a low-end risk of isolated large hail and a strong wind gusts. It won’t be an all-day washout, but be ready for scattered showers and rumbles of thunder, especially during the afternoon and evening.
Behind Thursday’s system, much cooler air returns Friday with lingering rain showers, especially early in the day. Afternoon highs may struggle to reach the low 50s, with chilly breezes adding an extra bite.
By Friday night into Saturday morning, another round of frost is possible—especially in sheltered valleys. Temperatures dip into the mid 30s, and some spots could briefly flirt with freezing again.
Saturday stays cool with highs only in the mid-50s, but skies will gradually clear. By Sunday, sunshine returns with a pleasant rebound into the mid 60s.
We’ll enjoy a brief return to milder weather Monday with highs near 70 degrees, but another cold front looks to swing in Tuesday with cooler temps and scattered showers.
