Cold air and wintry chances on the way

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy New Year! The cold air is here and it is here to stay for awhile. Afternoon highs on New Year’s Day will struggle to get out of the mid-30s for most of the day with off and on snow showers expected. Our eyes are on a pair of wintry chances moving later this week and into the weekend.

Friday Morning Snow
The first on moves in late Thursday into Friday. This will bring a quick burst of some snow showers to the area. This will amount to coating or so for most of the area. But, because the timing is early in the morning, this could cause some isolated impacts to the Friday morning commute. Temperatures will be cold on Friday as a few flurries remain through the rest of the day. Afternoon highs will only be in the low 30s, with breezy winds making it feel colder than that. Lows will fall into the teens by Saturday morning and this colder air sets the stage for what is to come to close out the weekend.

Sunday into Monday Winter Storm
Chances are increasing for an impactful winter storm Sunday into Monday across the area. This will have the potential for all winter precipitation types. From snow to the north, to rain to our south. In between the rain and snow, there could be a corridor with freezing rain/ice. The ice threat is increasing and will be something we will be watching closely in the coming days. Accumulating snow is also looking more likely across northern Kentucky as well. It is still way too early for specific amounts, but that is where things stand as of New Year’s Day.

Brutally Cold Weather Settles In
Behind that system, frigid conditions are expected into the rest of next week. Specific temperatures will be dependent on who has snow on the ground from the Sunday-Monday system and who doesn’t. If there is snow on the ground, we could see overnight lows well into the single digits.

What separates this cold stretch away from a typical winter cold snap is the longevity. We are expecting a week+ of temperatures at or below freezing. Now is a great time to winterize your home if you haven’t already.
