Clark County Creating New Social Media Policy
Clark County is working on a new social media policy for county employees that would ban county employees from searching personal pages while at work and require some posts to the county’s social media pages be approved first.
Brian Thomas, Clark County Attorney, said if the ordinance passes, it would:
(1) Limit employees from searching personal social media pages during work.
(2) Increase employee productivity and focus on their jobs.
(3) Limit inappropriate postings on county web pages.
(4) Prevent compromising the privacy of other employees.
Henry Branham, Clark County Judge-Executive, said as social media continues to grow, the county wants to have social media guidelines while on company time.
“We don’t want to inhibit the use of these things,” Judge Branham said. “We want them to be used; we just want them to be used in a proper manner.”
Judge Branham said the new policy will “set a standard that we expect our employees to be professional and not use Clark County resources… for their personal benefit.”
The proposed ordinance would also have an appeals process for employees who believe they’ve been unfairly reprimanded.
Yesterday, the proposal passed its first reading unanimously before the fiscal court. If it passes one more reading, it will become official.
Judge Branham said the state and other counties already have a similar plan in place.
