Civil rights group petitions for justice in teen death

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – A civil rights group wants justice following the death of a Kentucky teenager.

A petition from the group “Color of Change” has over 52-thousand signatures demanding surveillance videos be released from the Lincoln Village Juvenile Detention Center.

16-year-old Gynnya McMillen was found dead at the center back on January 11.

Investigators say hours before McMillen died, a martial arts hold had been used on her after she refused to take off a sweatshirt.

Following her death, the state dismissed Kentucky’s Juvenile Justice Commissioner, Bob Hayter.

An employee was also fired, accused of failing to carry out bed checks at the center.

The state says the investigation into McMillen’s death continues.
