City’s homelessness response system declares ‘White Flag Day,’ activates winter weather plan

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The Lexington-Fayette County Homelessness Response System has declared a “White Flag Day” and activated its Emergency Winter Weather Plan.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention extended the emergency plan to last until the morning of Thursday, Dec. 21.

This plan provides a response for times when extreme cold weather creates an additional, immediate need for more capacity to assist homeless people in Lexington.

The plan also allows shelters to add capacity to accommodate those in need, among other things.

A temporary shelter, located on the North Lexington YMCA campus — at 381 W Loudon Avenue — was also added this year that can accommodate up to 160 people. This shelter will be open 24/7 until March 31.

Other overnight shelters include Arbor Youth Services, the Catholic Action Center, the Community Action Council, GreenHouse17, Hope Center and the Salvation Army.
