City says inmate’s death doesn’t appear suspicious

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The death of a 63-year old jail inmate in Lexington does not appear to be suspicious, according to the city.

Investigators say a corrections officer patrolling the area found Otha Buchanan of Lexington unresponsive in his cell at 9:48 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015.  He was rushed to UK Hospital at 10:00 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m., according to the city.  The coroner says an autopsy is scheduled Saturday at the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort.

Buchanan was arrested and lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center on April 14, 2015, on charges of cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and minor traffic offenses, according to the city.

This is the second inmate death this week in Lexington.  On Tuesday, 46-year old Steve Lieras was found unresponsive in his jail cell and died about a half-hour later at the hospital, according to the city.
