LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Thursday! We have lingering clouds and chilly conditions in the forecast for your Thursday. Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the upper 30s and low 40s across southern Kentucky. While it won’t feel particularly warm, it’ll still be a relatively calm day to get outside if you don’t mind the chill.
Changes Coming Friday
A fast-moving clipper system is approaching from southern Canada, set to arrive in the Ohio Valley by Friday morning. As this system moves in, rain will develop early Friday and quickly transition to a mix of rain and snow, then all snow by late afternoon or evening. Snowfall accumulation won’t like happen until later into the day, but colder air filtering into the region may speed up this transition. Light snow is expected through Friday evening into the overnight hours in the mountains. If you have travel plans Friday evening, prepare for potentially slick roads and reduced visibility.
Snow and flurries may persist in the higher elevations of southeastern Kentucky through Saturday evening, though amounts should remain light. By Sunday, the weather begins to calm as the jet stream retreats northward and temperatures start to rebound. Expect lows in the teens Sunday morning, but with warming conditions heading into next week.
Christmas Weather Preview
Looking ahead to Christmas week, temperatures will trend milder, with highs reaching the 50s by Tuesday and Wednesday. A new system is expected to arrive on Christmas Eve, bringing a chance for rain as a stationary front sets up near the Ohio River Valley. While there’s still uncertainty in the exact timing and impact of this system, current trends suggest a wet rather than white Christmas for our region as temperatures are expected climb into the upper 40s and low 50s.
