Challenger Learning Center and UK College of Engineering team up for Regatta week

HAZARD, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky and the UK College of Engineering came together to host a week of Regatta Fun at the Hazard Pavilion to kick off July.

Some participants included Upward Bound Math and Science Program students from Cordia and Buckhorn. The goal of the event was to engineer the design and build of a boat made of only cardboard and duct tape. After designs were complete, teams raced their boats across the pool. The Challenger’s STEAM Team helped the teens during the building process.

“We have a wonderful group of students, and it is a blessing to be able to do so many wonderful things with them,” said Upward Bound Coordinator Bryan Swafford.

The event was also meant to promote an interest in an engineering career. Students had to have a basic understanding of buoyancy, water displacement, density, and volume.
