Centre overwhelms Anderson in home-opening blowout
DANVILLE, Ky. (Centre Athletics) – Centre College football treated fans at Farris Stadium to a dominant victory Saturday evening, defeating Anderson (Ind.) by a 61-10 final in the home opener.
The Colonels (2-0) outpaced the Ravens (0-2) in all facets of the game, resulting in their most lopsided final tally since a 63-7 decision at Hanover back on Sept. 5, 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Centre’s defense forced a quick three-and-out to start the game, and before two minutes had passed on the game clock the offense found the endzone. Senior Devin Hayes (Bowling Green, Ky.) hit true freshman Jordan Gunter (Louisville, Ky.) for the wideout’s first career score.
The Colonels lived in Anderson’s territory, scoring twice more before the opening quarter ended. Last week’s standout, Trevor Carnell (Shepherdsville, Ky.), plunged in from the goalline on Centre’s second possession, and senior Austin Hayes (Hendersonville, Tenn.) followed with a receiving touchdown to make it 21-0.
Likewise, the Colonels’ defense was just as overwhelming. Anderson failed to get a first down until the closing seconds of the first period, and wouldn’t find the redzone until late in the first half.
Tommy Kaczocha (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) got the Centre defense in on the touchdown parade, as well, running back a fumble recovery 20 yards for a score midway through the second quarter.
The rout was on fairly early, as Carnell and junior receiver Cody Estep (Pikeville, Ky.) each added scores before the halftime horn.
Up 40-7 at the break, plenty of Centre reserves got a chance to see some action.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Lopsided numbers abound in Saturday’s final box score, but some notable offensive numbers include Centre’s 337 rushing yards on 47 attempts (7.2 per carry), and its 27 total first downs.
Defensively, the Colonels held the Ravens to just 51 yards on 30 carries (1.7) and a 1-for-12 conversion effort on third down.
Carnell followed last week’s record-breaking performance with 115 yards on 17 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
Hayes went 15 of 23 for 155 yards and three touchdowns, while Estep again led the team with five catches and 73 yards.
Freshman Nate Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) led a balanced Centre defense with seven tackles, while junior Zack Berger (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 2.5 sacks and six total tackles.
Centre’s defense continuously pressured the Anderson backfield, resulting in five sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
