UPDATE: All roads reopen following freak car crash in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – An unusual car accident on New Circle Road in Lexington Friday night left a man badly injured and led to temporary road closures that impacted traffic for hours.

The Lexington Herald-Leader says a man was driving a BMW on the inner loop of New Circle Road between Richmond Road and Alumni Drive when a tarp flew onto his front windshield, causing the man to lose control of his car.

The report says the car went over an embankment and the man was thrown from the car.  The report says he suffered life-threatening injuries. His name wasn’t released.

The report says investigators don’t know where the tarp came from, whether it came off another vehicle or was on the road beforehand.

Police shutdown the inner loop of New Circle Road at Richmond Road along with the entrance to the inner loop of New Circle Road from Richmond Road, while first responders worked the accident scene.

Traffic was diverted to Richmond Road.

All roads were reopened by 9:20 p.m., according to officials.
