Candidate Chastised for Mailing ‘Free Side Dish’ Coupons

NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) – Officials say a city commission candidate in northern Kentucky broke the law when she sent out 2,000 postcards touting her candidacy and offering a coupon for a free side dish at a local restaurant.

Newport City Commission candidate Rachel Comte told the Kentucky Enquirer that the mailers were “an honest mistake.” Comte explained that she is a first-time candidate and wanted to support the local business, Webb’s BBQ. She says she didn’t realize that by doing so she was violating Kentucky campaign laws.

Comte says the state agreed to not take further action as long as she covers up the coupon on future mailings with a sticker. She also issued an apology on her website.

Comte is one of seven candidates running for four seats on the city commission.
