‘California Chrome’ colt tops Friday’s yearling sale at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. (KEENELAND) – A colt from the first crop of two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome, winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1), sold to Novogratz Racing Stable for $85,000 to lead Friday’s 11th session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Novogratz, the day’s leading buyer with three purchases for $155,000, also acquired fillies by Artie Schiller and Competitive Edge.

Keeneland sold 256 yearlings for a total of $4,396,800 on Friday, for an average of $17,175 and a median of $11,000.

With two sessions remaining in the September Sale, 2,433 yearlings have sold for $356,398,100, for an average of $146,485 and a median of $65,000.

Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the session-topper is out of the stakes-placed Dirty Rush and a half-brother to stakes winner Rush Now. He is from the family of stakes winners Promise of War, Baldwin County, Britt’s Jules and Probation Ready.

Taylor Made sold 23 yearlings for a total of $464,200 to lead all consignors.

Three yearlings sold for $80,000 apiece.

Taproot Bloodstock purchased a colt by Include who is a half-brother to stakes winner Inconclusive and stakes-placed Fall At Last. Consigned by Threave Main Stud, agent, the colt is out of the Mr. Greeley mare Ani La, and from the family of Grade 3 winner Hence and Canadian champion Marchfield.

Trainer Kenny McPeek, agent, paid the amount for a filly by Summer Front from the family of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Believe You Can. Out of the Gone West mare Bar Lazy J, she was consigned by Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent.

Cara Bloodstock, agent, consigned a filly by Palace Malice who sold for $80,000 to Patrick Hoppel. Out of the winning Holy Bull mare Breech Inlet, she is from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner By Land by Sea, and Grade 2 winner Bauble Queen.

Saturday is the penultimate date of the September Sale. The Saturday and Sunday sessions begin at 10 a.m.
