Business damaged in Blue Grass Stockyards Fire honored with Spirit of Lexington Award
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – On Friday the Mayor’s office presented Leak Eliminators LLC with the ‘Spirit of Lexington’ Award.
Leak Eliminators LLC was one of many businesses that had extensive damage after the Blue Grass Stockyards fire. They say they lost their business office, files and computers in Saturday’s fire. The company is still operating despite the setback and wanted to celebrate first responders. In conjunction with Lexington’s Firefighter Appreciation Day, the company offered to give every firefighter a free meal.
“We’re so grateful because we could’ve lost everything,” said Bruce Whitaker. “It could’ve been 60 employees without a job and that impacts downstream to their kids. That’s a huge impact. These guys come here without any fear, came in fought this fire and saved our business. It means the world to me and every worker here.”
Fire officials say the company was very helpful in fighting the fire at the stockyards. ABC 36 was told that employees laid gravel to create a path so that fire crews could walk on and drive their engines around the stockyards. Fire crews shared that the company also used their own wreckers and knocked down fences to create more room for firefighters to battle the fire.
