Brother donates a kidney to his sister

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The bond between a brother and sister is special, but the Smith siblings have a bond that can’t be broken.

Last summer, Kristyn Smith got sick and when she visited the doctors office, she was told she had a stomach virus and it would pass.

Kristyn never got better and eventually she went back and would have to be flown to UK hospital.

She learned she had end stage renal disease or a kidney disease and would need to get a kidney transplant.

Her younger brother, Alex Smith got tested to see if he was a match and he was.

“I just felt like it should be me giving it to her to help her out,” said Alex Smith.

Eleven days before the surgery, Alex’s home caught fire and he lost everything.

He says it was overwhelming, but he wouldn’t let that stop him from helping his sister.

On Thursday, they did the surgery and both of them say they are feeling good.

“He’s been perfectly healthy and that he would sacrifice that for me is just really special,” said Kristyn Smith.

Kristyn is getting married in the fall and her brother, Alex will be walking her down the aisle.

There is a GoFundMe page for Alex while he recovers from the fire and kidney donation.
