BREAKING: Blue Grass Stockyards to rebuild on Ironworks Pike
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A big announcement Friday morning points to the future for Blue Grass Stockyards.
Saying the company “is to cattle what Keeneland is to thoroughbreds,” Mayor Jim Gray announced that the stockyards will rebuild on Ironworks pike in Lexington.
A fire back on January 30 completely destroyed the facility, and damaged several nearby businesses.
Despite the loss, the company has continued holding sales at alternate stockyard locations.
The new stockyards will be right off of I-75, and is designed for easy access for farmers, according to COO Jim Akers.
Last year, over 100,000 animals were sold at the Lexington market. Altogether, at its seven locations in Kentucky and on-line, the market buys about $600 million in cattle each year.
