Blackjewel miners to receive financial assistance
HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – Financial relief could be on the way for unpaid Blackjewel miners, following an announcement at the Harlan County Courthouse Monday morning.
The Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation announced a $492,000 gift to Blackjewel miners which will go to the Harlan County Community Action Agency, Inc. According to Ross Kegan, former Vice President of Operations of Black Mountain Resources, who spoke on behalf of the Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation, miners in the immediate-needs database will each get $2,000.
“I am overwhelmed by this amazing gesture of love and generosity toward our miners by The Gilliam Foundation. This amount alone will provide a significant boost to our miners to help get their finances back on track,” said Dan Mosley, Harlan County Judge/Executive.
Miners in the database include those impacted in Harlan, Bell, Leslie and Knox Counties.
Another announcement is expected later Monday regarding assistance for miners in surrounding counties.
