Blackjewel miners in Leslie County to receive donation Thursday

HYDEN, Ky. (WTVQ) – Out-of-work Blackjewel coal miners in Leslie County will receive a financial donation Thursday to help them pay bills.

The Thompson Charitable Foundation is donating $50,000 to the Leslie County Community Foundation.

Each eligible miner in Leslie County can receive up to $600 to help pay their bills.  The miners haven’t been paid since the coal company filed for bankruptcy July 1, 2019.

The foundation was established in 1987 by B. Ray Thompson, Sr., a leader in the U.S. coal industry and developer of the Thompson non-recovery coke even process.  The foundation works to improve the quality of life for people in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

Blackjewel miners are asked to go to Big Creek Mission’s ‘The Well’ in Leslie County on Thursday, September 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to receive the donated money.

Eligible miners are asked to bring a photo ID, their last pay stub from Blackjewel and the paper bills that need to be paid.
