Bitterly cold temperatures could affect morning commutes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Frosty temperatures have already pervaded  the Bluegrass air, but those same frigid temperatures have now mingled with snow precipitation, which could cause icy conditions on roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

Lexington Public Safety officials say motorists should be keenly aware of the road conditions during morning commutes.

According to Public Safety officials, make sure your vehicle is sufficient by checking your batteries, antifreeze levels, heaters, defrosters, wipers, and windshield wipers.

They say make sure your vehicle has an emergency care kit that includes: Jumper cables, flares or reflectors, windshield washer fluid, an ice scraper, blankets, nonperishable food, and a first-aid kit.

Public Safety officials also say to leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead.

Officials say try to keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full to alleviate fuel line freezing, and in preparation for lengthy delays on roadways.

They also say dress warmly for the weather by wearing layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, in anticipation of unexpected emergencies.

City crews were out since 10 p.m. Wednesday night preparing for today’s snowfall, and will continue working today.
