Bitter cold lingers before a gradual midweek warm-up
Single-digit temperatures stick around through Monday before milder air and rain chances arrive later this week.
Bitter Cold Holds On After a Frigid Start
We started the day under brutally cold conditions, with morning temperatures in the single digits and wind chills dropping below zero in many spots. Despite plenty of sunshine through the afternoon, the deep snowpack and arctic air made it difficult for much melting to take place. While sunshine helped just a bit, most snow-covered areas will remain frozen solid until we climb back above freezing later this week. If you have to be out and about tonight into tomorrow morning, make sure to watch for slick spots and snow covered roads that may not have cleared yet.
Another Freezing Night Ahead
As we head into tonight, the cold is not letting up. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to drop back into the single digits once again, and in a few locations, wind chills could dip below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 AM Eastern Monday as these dangerously cold conditions continue. If you’re heading out overnight or early Monday morning, make sure to bundle up and limit time outdoors when possible.
Slow Warm-Up Begins Monday
Monday will bring another mostly sunny day as high pressure remains in control. Temperatures will slowly recover into the upper 20s to low 30s, which will feel slightly better compared to the past couple of days, but still quite cold. Winds will begin to turn more southwesterly during the afternoon, setting the stage for a gradual warm-up heading into the middle of the week.
Milder Air Returns, Rain on the Way
By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will steadily climb back into the 40s, with highs nearing the upper 40s and low 50s by midweek. Thursday looks noticeably warmer, with highs reaching the mid to upper 50s ahead of a strong cold front. That system will bring widespread rain and gusty winds, with rainfall totals between a half inch and one inch possible. While thunder is not guaranteed, a few stronger showers can’t be ruled out.
Cooler Again Briefly, Then Rebounding
Behind Thursday’s system, colder air will briefly return for Friday with highs falling back into the 30s and 40s. That cool-down won’t last long, though, as temperatures rebound back into the 50s heading into next weekend under drier conditions.
