Bitter cold holds on across central and eastern Kentucky
Dangerous wind chills continue as flurries and another light wintry system remain possible this week
Bitter Cold Continues Across Central and Eastern Kentucky
It was a beautiful day across central and eastern Kentucky, but it was also another very cold one. Despite plenty of sunshine, high temperatures struggled to climb out of the low 20s, and when you factor in the wind, it felt even colder. Many locations only felt like the upper single digits to low teens throughout the afternoon.
This cold air remains firmly in place as we head into the first part of the week, with only small, gradual improvements ahead.
Tonight: Frigid Temperatures Settle Back In
Tonight will be another bitterly cold night across the region. Actual air temperatures will fall back into the low teens for most communities, with wind chills dropping back into the single digits. A few colder spots, especially in sheltered or snow-covered areas, could briefly dip below zero.
Clouds will gradually increase overnight, and a weak disturbance moving through the area may squeeze out a few snow flurries, especially north of Interstate 64. Any accumulation would be very light, generally just a coating at most.
Monday: Slight Warm-Up, Still Cold Overall
Monday finally brings a small step in the right direction. Temperatures will climb back into the low 30s, allowing some areas to briefly rise above freezing for the first time in several days. However, clouds will be stubborn, and it will still feel cold by early February standards.
A few lingering flurries or light snow showers remain possible early in the day, but no meaningful accumulation is expected. Southern Kentucky may catch a bit more sunshine compared to areas farther north.
Tuesday: Watching the Next Light Wintry System
As we head into Tuesday, temperatures will continue to moderate, reaching the upper 30s and even low 40s in parts of the area ahead of the next weather system. This system will bring a chance for both rain and snow, depending on where you live.
Northern Kentucky and areas closer to Interstate 64 have the best chance to see snowfall, while locations farther south may see rain mix in more quickly. Overall, this does not look like a high-impact event, but a coating to around an inch of snow is possible in a few spots, with isolated higher totals north of I-64.
Behind this system, colder air will return once again, sending temperatures back into the 20s.
Cold Air Isn’t Going Anywhere Just Yet
Even with brief warm-ups, winter still has a strong grip on Kentucky. After Tuesday’s system moves through, colder air filters back in, keeping daytime highs in the 20s and 30s through the middle of the week. Any moisture left on roads could refreeze overnight, so slick spots will remain a concern during the early morning hours.
