Berea College awarded $100,000 Our Town grant

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Berea College has been awarded a $100,000 grant to help communities in eastern Kentucky by using arts and cultural assets.

The Kentucky Arts Council says the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town award will be used to identify local arts and cultural assets that can be used to create a rural revitalization strategy.

The project will use a series of community meetings and workshops to find assets in the Highlands Promise Zone, which includes Bell, Clay, Harlan, Knox, Letcher, Perry and Whitley counties. The arts council says the area has an overall poverty rate of 30 percent.

The NEA received 275 applications for Our Town funding this year and made 69 awards totaling almost $5 million.
