Back-to-school rally becomes drive-thru second year in a row

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Across Lexington, schools partnered with the YMCA to give backpacks of school supplies to families in need. This is the second year the event has taken place as a drive through opposed to the regular back to school rally with activities in local parks.

Backpacks are available for kids elementary through high school with tools they need to tackle the upcoming year.

“It’s just good to see people, like a lot of families are repeat that come and get supplies and so this is like a good way to connect with families and students,” says Sandra Bellew-Barnes of the Breckinridge Elementary Family Resource Center. “Especially since the pandemic, we haven’t had that opportunity to have as much one on one as we have in previous years.”

Volunteers say they hope to see the event return to normal next year but until then, they’re happy to see families still coming.
